It is often said that “service sells”. While I do believe that to be true, I also think it potentially lessens service somewhat by attaching that type of reasoning for providing it for that purpose. Service isn’t simply a product or a commodity to be sold or measured, but rather a way of life or a manner of existing. I know it is something that I can ever improve at, and I am hopeful that as professionals and simply as people, that we all can. Service is:
- Not just a deliverable, it is a dogma.
- An orientation beyond just an outcome.
- Not just a theory, it is a tenet.
- A passion beyond just a process.
- Not just a rule, it is a realization.
- A mission beyond just a methodology.
- Not just proposed, it is practiced.
- Proactive beyond just prescribed.
Service is a journey. Service is something everyone can and should benefit from receiving. Servant leadership isn’t something leaders should seek to provide, it is something they should seek to live. Superior service must be provided to our own family, friends, community, and those we are privileged to lead professionally. Ever learning, ever growing in these arenas then enables us to serve any customers in any industry any of us are privileged enough to receive the honor of.
Service is NOT what you DO. It is who you ARE. Let’s provide service that makes others smile. Let’s try to be snarly, gnarly good at it.
