Leadership Lessons learned walking a golden retriever in the woods for 15 years.

  1. Don’t assume they’ll take the lead.  If they don’t, ask if they want to, encourage them, and acknowledge positively when they do.
  2. Once they take the lead, let them lead.  Suggest course correction only if absolutely necessary.
  3. Allow them to set their preferred pace.  Lightly encourage increasing or decreasing as needed.
  4. Only use a leash when necessary to avoid danger.  Otherwise let them run and explore.
  5. Realize the favorite part for them is the journey, not the destination.
  6. Understand sometimes they are walking because they feel obligated.  It is your duty to provide motivation, excitement, and avenues for joy.
  7. Change paths to stimulate new experiences and energy.  Keep core objectives constant.
  8. Never miss a chance to walk with them whether you want to or not.  It propels their best long-term growth and development.
